I know that youall have been jonesing to relive
the ALOlympic dream. Now, that dream can once again become reality thanks to the
generosity of ALO. After Ian Stone's audience recording was lost to hard drive
malfunction, there seemed to be no hope of ever hearing this fantastic throwdown
again. However,a fewmonths after the show, Kabir handed me copies of the audio
from the video that the Utah Kind Crew had shot of that epic night. Although the
audio was decent for a camcorder source, it suffered from very low recording
levels, one channel hadbad crunchy distortion at times of heavy bass, and very
loud crowd noise. I did my best to improve the recording with levels adjustment
and some EQ, but it still was not doing the show justice. Then, up steps Steve
Adams with the real deal--the soundboard recording from the night! As is the
case with many soundboard feeds, the mix was off for the first 3-4 songs. Dan's
guitar was quite low in relation to the other instruments. I used a higher
portion of the audience recording for those songs to help bring Dan's sound up.
It kinda worked, but had a tradeoff with a less crisp sound. Overall, the
audience source adds a wonderful vibrancy to the recording, helping capture the
atmosphere that was present during the show--something that is often lost in
pure soundboard recordings.
