Hey gang-
In anticipation of the upcoming NYE run at the Independant in SF, (formerly the Justice League, which it still is in my mind..) I figured I'd finally jump on the ALO list and meet some of you cats.. Due to a crazy year, the last time I saw ALO was Last NYE, when they opened for String Cheese at the Concourse in Sf. I would have been there regardless of ALO, as I knew it was my last SCI NYE for a while, or ever.. Anyways, I had already gotten a spot waiting for the Cheese, and even though everyone I knew went to see Zap Mama or something else, I was planted for the cheese. I hadn't seen ALO in a couple of years, and I didn't know what to expect.. (I think my first ALo experience was in 2000 or so, at the Great American Music Hall, when they opened for Kimock of God knows who..There was only about 50-100 people in the venue..) Anyways, the party favors were percolating in my brain, as New years in SF can be a little rowdy, to say the least. At any rate, ALO Really rocked my world! I was amazed at the broadness of their sound- They sounded really BIG and Full. I loved the variety in the songs, with the highlights being 'She's a Sweetheart" (Hilarious, with Bill Nershi to boot!), the 'Yes We Can' cover (really funky, one of my favorite songs, and they really can play some funk!), and the dark and twisted Shapeshifter, which really threw me for a loop! I didn't ezpect anything nearly this tripped out.. By the end of the set, I was full on Puddled! It ranked up there with some of the best 'intro' sets to my faveorite bands I have seen- Bands where I haven't seen them live very much and/or am not very familiar with the music, but I have an Epic time, and walk away a real fan! Although I have seen ALO 15 or so times, it is usually at festies of opening sets, and I had never given them thier props! (I'm stupid, I know..)
Anyways, I have decided to rage it at the Indy for a ALO NYE! Even though I still am not that familiar with the entire body of work, I can't wait to be rocked by the Orchestra! Hard to beat a top shelf Open Bar, as well! As I know for the experience of seeing Soulive there with the open Bar on NYE 2004, half of the crowd was in a giant bar line all night, but they let us walk away with as many drinks as you could carry..
I am also checking out the Post-Party at 12 Galaxies, with BLVD and Blue Turtle, 2 bands I have never heard, but dancing to noon the next day sounds perfect! Also at teh Galaxie's party will be MoPo, (DJ Motion Potion) who is the countrie's foremost funk/raregroove dj, who spins things like Galactic, and is a really nice guy, to boot, so git yer dancin' shoes ready!
Does anyone want to get together for a preparty? Let's get this List GOIN!
