From Nicole on the ALO Yahoo group list:

First, i have to apologize for neglecting to grab the setlists at
both the baltimore and the falls church, va shows. i was doing
outreach for the surfrider foundation (surfirder.org) at both shows-
in my efforts to do so many things at once i completely forgot about
setlists.

but some notes:

8x10- BALTIMORE
FRI OCT 12
2 sets, no opener. i'd say ALO played from about 11:15pm-1:45am.
the 8x10 is a small place- holds a little over 400 people. used to
be called "the funk box". bands really like this venue- it has great
sound. but it is very tight- small stage, narrow space in front of
the stage, balcony overlooking the stage- people hanging over the
stage from every possible angle:) it was a mixed crowd- mostly older
guys. while it was packed in front of the stage it was a more sedate
crowd. however people did get rocking during the second set and the
dance floor was rolling under our feet with the weight of everyone
getting down:) they had a better turnout this time around, as
compared with their last show at the 8x10. estimated to be at least
225 people.

the highlights for me were a cover of "abracadabra" during the second
set (my first time hearing them play it), zach going into a lenthy
description of the hot tub story during "hot tub", "the
gardener", "try" and "reality police". as an overall note for the
setlist, it was very light on "R&C" material. but from what i can
remember the setlists were all album material with the exception
of "abbra", "reality police", "hot tub" and the japanese song.

i did grab the setlist from the 2nd set:
set 2:
bbq
hot tub
spectrum
camper
abbracadabra
bubble
maria

e:
roses
lady

THE STATE THEATRE- FALLS CHURCH, VA
SAT OCT 13
This venue is an old movie theater I think- very large. in terms of
set up, sort of like the warfield in SF. no sense of how many people
were there. i liked the crowd- i met some really nice people and saw
leslie and caroline (both nights) there was a young boy at the show
on sat night, accompanied by his dad, who bought and then put on his
new ALO t-shirt before the band had even taken the stage. it was
adorable. he also bought a ryan kerrigan poster and patiently waited
to talk with each member of the band after the show so that he could
get their autographs on the poster. very VERY cute! was probably
the non-music-related highight of my weekend

the show started off very slowly with "roses and clover". there were
some dancing on the floor during the first set, but everyone really
got down during the second set. it seemed that every song pulled in
a few new dancers, and then by the close of the show EVERY SINGLE
PERSON on the dance floor was getting down.

i know i could say this about just about every ALO show, but there
was a lot of love in the room last night. there were some young guys
there, near me on the floor, who talked to everyone around them all
night about how wonderful ALO is, how they are the best band in this
genre out there right now, how each member of ALO is so talented,
etc it was sooooooo sweet! to see such a mixed crowd getting down
to ALO, together- beautiful this is why i love the east coast
shows it's hard to see on a show by show basis, but i think
overall ALO is growing here on the east coast. one show at a time

as for the music, each note was perfect. the band really seemed to
be concentrating on the music last night. it was so beautiful to
hear- i was almost in tears by the encore. best "shapeshifter" i
have ever heard. sort of trancey in the middle. they played "pecs"
with a nice intro from zach about gov schwarzenegger.
great "kolomana", with an elaborate intro/history of the song from
zach. zach said that at that show in 1998 there wasn't anyone on the
dance floor- ah, i wish everyone on this list was there in 1998.

aside from the encore, "mashed potatoes" and "pecs" it was all very
well done studio material. as usual dan's guitar playing was out of
this world. brought the place to a standstill on both nights. (it's
his bday on monday. they'll be in nashville)

since there were 2 openers on sat night- chris velun (singer
songwriter from philly i believe) and "the brakes", there were some
guest sit ins. ALO brought the trumpet and sax players from "the
brakes" out for lady loop. amazing!

the encore was "i shall be released" with chris velun. imagine the
version they did with jack johnson at the byron bay bluesfest this
year, and replace jack's vocal part with chris velun. (jack/chris
did the first verse, dave did the second, zach did the third) the
final final number was steve's final project from UCSB, for which all
of the members of "the brakes" joined ALO on stage. horn players
played their horns and everyone else tapped on beer bottles with
drumsticks. chris velun came out on guitar. very fun and
different.

while i have people at the surfrider table, talking about surfrider
campaigns, i like to ask people how they found out about ALO. just
about everyone i spoke with knew of ALO through jack johnson (they
had seen ALO open for jack in 2005) or they just happened to be there
with a friend, or had heard about ALO and checked out ALO's myspace
page. so based on how people came into the venue, and then the
amount of dancing and smiling that happened both nights, i would
judge again that the ALO east coast fanbase is on the rise.

i would like to thank ALO and jenna for giving a shout out to
surfrider from the stage on both nights, and for letting us set up
the outreach table. it was awesome:) we have started a new campaign
called "rise above plastics"- if anyone is interested in learning
more about plastic debris in our oceans then read this really
fantastic and short summary:
http://www.algalita.org/pdf/plastic-in-the-environment.pdf

much love to ALO for 2 nights, and 2 sets each night. it was a great
weekend:)

I had a great time. I have seen ALO a few times: Allgood 2006, Recher Theater in Towson and I can't remember if I saw them at Bonnaroo 2005 or not. Each time has been better then the show before and this was no different. The State Theatre is a great place to see a show. The sound was great. Very loud and very clear. Amazing guitar work. Closing the night with a mariachi band song that no one knows that was written by a college kid...greatness!

Sangre was written by ALO bassist Steve Adams as part of his senior thesis for his Ethnomusicology degree at UCSB.
